Milligan baseball picks up first win of the season

Milligan College, Tenn. (Feb. 8, 2013) --- The Milligan College baseball team rolled past Johnson University to record an 11-0 nonconference victory in seven innings on a chilly Friday night at Anglin Field
 
   Brett Mercurio (West Palm Beach, Fla.) put the Buffaloes on the board in the home side of the first as he hit a single to score Corey McPherson (Johnson City, Tenn.) and Luke Kirk (Gate City, Va.) to get the first two runs on the board in the first inning. The second inning saw Nick Loughry (Kingsport, Tenn.) hit a triple to bring Sam Tarlton (Chuckey, Tenn.) across the plate in the bottom of the second, and the Buffaloes extended their lead by four more runs to go up 6-0 after three innings of play. 
 
   The Buffaloes pushed their lead to 11-0 in the fourth and fifth innings to secure the victory.
 
   On the mound, Brent Whittington (Wilkesboro, N.C.) picked up the win in his first start of the season. In five innings of work, Whittington gave up just one hit with eight strikeouts.  Tanner Strange (Newport, Tenn.) and Corey Jenkins (Jonesborough, Tenn.) did not give up a hit in their first collegiate inning.
 
   McPherson led the way at the plate as he went 2-for-2 with three runs score, while Loughrey was 1-for-3 with a triple and three RBIs.
 
   With the win, Milligan is 1-1 in the start of their season. 
 
   The Buffaloes are slated to return to action on Saturday, Feb. 9, with a doubleheader against Johnson University. First pitch at Anglin Field is set for 1 p.m.
