Emory, Va. (March 12, 2013) --- Milligan College senior
Tyree Jefferies (Jackson, Tenn.) hit three homeruns to lead the Buffaloes baseball team to a 25-8 nonconference victory over Emory and Henry on Tuesday afternoon in Emory, Va.
Corey McPherson (Johnson City, Tenn.) scored off a
Brett Mercurio (West Palm Beach, Fla.) single in the first inning to open the scoring for Milligan. After the Wasps tied the game at 1-1 in the home side of the first, Jefferies put the Buffaloes ahead with a solo homerun over the centerfield fence in the second inning.
Milligan kept the inning going as McPherson drove in
Blake Buck (Maryville, Tenn.) and
Luke Kirk (Gate City, Va.) brought in two runs.
Brandon Malone (Maryville, Tenn.) capped off the inning as he drove Mercurio across home plate and then scored on a Wasp throwing error to give Milligan an 8-3 lead after two innings of play.
The Milligan offense continued to stay hot in the third inning as
Sam Tarlton (Chuckey, Tenn.), Jefferies, Mercurio and McPherson all crossed home plate to increase the Buffaloes lead to 12-3. The Wasps put two runs on the board in the bottom of the third inning, but the Buffaloes took a 13-5 lead in the fourth inning with a
Cody Hyder (Elizabethton, Tenn.) home run.
Milligan added to their lead in the top of the fifth inning as Jefferies and Buck scored on a
Nathan Millsap (Kingsport, Tenn.) double, and Hyder and Millsap also crossed home plate for the Buffaloes in the frame. Both teams added two runs in the sixth inning as
Dustin Clawson (Johnson City, Tenn.) and Malone scored for Milligan as the Buffaloes extended their lead to 20-7 after six innings of play. Jefferies capped off the game with a two-run homerun in the top of the seventh and a three-run homerun in the top of the eighth.
Jefferies finished the game 5-for-7 with seven RBIs. McPherson was 4-for-5, while Kirk was 2-for-4 with four RBIs. Buck ended the game 3-for-4. On the mound,
Jake Watts (Boone, N.C.) picked up the victory as he allowed just two earned runs on eight hits in two innings of work.
With the win, Milligan improves to 10-10 overall.
The Buffaloes return to action on Friday, March 15, as they host Appalachian Athletic Conference foe Point University. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
