Milligan baseball slides past VI in AAC action

Milligan College, Tenn. (March 29, 2013) --- The Milligan College baseball team scored two runs in the seventh inning to slide past Appalachian Athletic Conference foe Virginia Intermont for a 4-3 victory on Friday evening at Anglin Field.
 
   After the Cobras opened the game with a run in the first inning, Brandon Malone (Maryville, Tenn.) tied the game as he crossed home plate off a Blake Buck (Maryville, Tenn.) single. The Cobras battled back to regain to take a 2-1 lead after three innings of play.
 
   The Buffaloes struck again in the fourth inning when Buck drove in Tyree Jeffries (Jackson, Tenn.) to tie the game at 2-2, but VI regained a run lead in the fifth inning. After a scoreless sixth inning, Hunter Carpenter (Sneedville, Tenn.) gave the Buffaloes their first lead of the day in seventh as he drove Corey McPherson (Johnson City, Tenn.) and Malone as Milligan held a 4-3 lead.
 
   The Cobras put runners in scoring position in the top of the eighth. However, the Buffaloes ended the frame with a double play. Milligan put runners on second and third base in the home side of the frame, but was unable to add to their lead. In the final inning, Milligan limited Virginia Intermont to just one hit to take the victory.
 
   Buck led the way at the plate as he was 3-for-3 with two RBIs, while Carpenter was 1-for-1 with two RBIs. Jeffries ended the game 2-for-3.
 
   On the mound, Ethan Fleenor (Johnson City, Tenn.) picked up the win. In seven innings of work, Fleenor allowed just one earned run on six hits with three strikeouts.
 
   With the win, Milligan improves to 4-6 in AAC action and 13-15 overall, while VI falls to 7-3 in conference play and 16-7 overall.
 
   The Buffaloes return to action on Saturday, March 29, as they close out the series with Virginia Intermont with a doubleheader. First pitch at Anglin Field is set for 1 p.m.
