Milligan baseball sweeps UVA-Wise

Wise, Va. (April 10, 2013) --- The Milligan College baseball team swept a nonconference doubleheader with UVA-Wise on Wednesday night in Wise, Va. The Buffaloes picked up a 7-6 extra innings win in the first game, and then pulled away to take a 9-1 victory in the nightcap.

In the first game, Milligan jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning, and extended their lead to 6-0 in the top of the third. The Cavaliers cut the Milligan lead in half with three runs in the home side of the third inning, but the Buffaloes added a single run in the fourth. After UVA-Wise scored two runs in the fifth and tied the game in the seventh, Sam Tarlton (Chuckey, Tenn.) crossed the plate off a Tyree Jeffries (Jackson, Tenn.) hit to pick up the win for Milligan in the eighth inning.

Justin Johnson (North Wilkesboro, N.C.) picked up the win on the mound for Milligan. In two innings of work, Johnson allowed one unearned run on two hits and two strikeouts.

At the plate, Brandon Malone (Maryville, Tenn.) led the way as he went 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Jeffries finished the game 3-for-4 with two RBIs.

The second game saw the Buffaloes struck first as they scored three runs in the third inning. The Buffaloes extended their lead in the fourth with two runs, and then took a 9-0 lead with three runs in the sixth inning. UVA-Wise put a run on the board in the bottom of the sixth with a solo homerun. However, Milligan kept the Cavaliers at bay to take the victory.

Justin Freeman (Dayton, Tenn.) picked up the win on the mound in his first collegiate start. In five innings of work, Freeman allowed just two hits and recorded nine strikeouts. Malone went 2-for-3 with three RBIs at the plate, while Jeffries was 2-for-4 with three RBIs.

With the sweep, Milligan improves to 20-18 overall.

The Buffaloes return to action on Saturday, April 13, as they travel to Appalachian Athletic Conference foe Union College to kick off a weekend series with a doubleheader. First pitch is set for 1 p.m., in Barbourville, Ky.
