Milligan baseball splits with SWU

Milligan College, Tenn. (April 2, 2013) --- The Milligan College baseball team split a nonconference doubleheader with Southern Wesleyan University on Tuesday afternoon at Anglin Field. The Buffaloes were unable to rally as they fell 1-0 in the first game, but used a four run second inning to pull away to a 13-1 victory in the second game.

In the first game, Luke Kirk (Gate City, Va.) was in scoring position in the first inning, but the Buffaloes were unable to score the run. Neither team could get anything going until the sixth inning when Southern Wesleyan scored a single run. The Buffaloes saw Hunter Carpenter (Sneedville, Tenn.) and Corey McPherson (Johnson City, Tenn.) reached base in the home side of the frame, and Milligan put two runners aboard in the seventh inning. However, they were unable to score the tying run.

On the mound, Tyler Wilson (Johnson City, Tenn.) was handed the loss. In five innings of work, Wilson allowed just one earned run on one hit with five strikeouts. McPherson led the way at the plate as he went 1-for-3.

After the Buffaloes retired the first three batters of the second game in order, Milligan scored a single run in the bottom of the first inning when Kirk scored on a McPherson single. In the second inning, the Buffaloes saw McPherson drive Blake Buck (Maryville, Tenn.) across home plate and Kirk drove in two runs. Milligan capped off the inning when Sam Tarlton (Chuckey, Tenn.) scored to give the Buffaloes a 5-0 lead.

The Buffaloes struck again in the fourth when Kirk drove Tarlton across home plate, and Kirk scored off a Brandon Malone (Maryville, Tenn.) single to push the Milligan lead to 7-0. The Warriors put a run on the board in the fifth inning, but the Buffaloes countered when McPherson scored on a Buck sac fly. Milligan added five runs in the bottom of the sixth to secure the victory.

Kirk and McPherson led the way at the plate as they were 3-for-4. Kirk finished the game with four RBIs, while McPherson had three RBIs. Malone ended the game 2-for-4.

On the mound, Tanner Strange (Newport, Tenn.) picked up the win in his first collegiate start. Strange allowed one earned run on three hits with four strikeouts in five innings of work.

   Milligan moves to 15-17 overall.

The Buffaloes are slated to return to action on Friday, April 5, as they host Appalachian Athletic Conference foe St. Andrews University. First pitch at Anglin Field is set for 7 p.m.
