McGinnis lifts Milligan softball past Columbia in AAC tournament

Kingsport, Tenn. (April 23, 2013) --- The Milligan College softball team saw Taylor McGinnis (Knoxville, Tenn.) hit a two-run homerun in the top of the sixth inning to propel the Buffaloes to a 5-2 victory in the Appalachian Athletic Conference softball tournament at Domtar Park in Kingsport, Tenn. The Buffaloes will play top-seeded Reinhardt University on Wednesday at 3 p.m., in the winner's bracket.

After the first two innings saw neither team able to score, the Buffaloes saw Jessica Connatser (Maryville, Tenn.) and Camille Olvey (Maryville, Tenn.) reach third and second base in the top of the third. However, Milligan was unable to bring the runs home. Connatser struck defensively for the Buffaloes as she grabbed a fly ball over the fence in the home side of the inning to keep the game scoreless heading to the fourth inning.

In the fifth inning, senior Abby Hughes (Rogersville, Tenn.) recorded a single to lead off the inning. Olvey drove Hughes home with a double, and then Olvey gave Milligan a 2-0 lead as she scored on an Emily Biggs (Kingsport, Tenn.) hit. Columbia, however, responded in the home side of the inning as they scored two runs.

Krista Lambdin (Knoxville, Tenn.) opened the sixth inning with a single. McGinnis struck at the next at bat with a two-run homerun over the centerfield fence. Milligan was unable to keep the inning alive as they held a 4-2 advantage heading into the seventh. The Buffaloes added a run in the final inning as Olvey scored on a Biggs single, and the Milligan defense retired the Columbia batters in order to secure the win.

Olvey led the way at the plate as she went 2-for-2 with a RBI. McGinnis was 1-for-3 with two RBIs. In the pitching circle, Chancli Connatser (Maryville, Tenn.) picked up the win as she allowed two unearned runs on three hits in just over five innings of work. Megan Nicol (Surry, British Columbia) earned a save.

With the win, Milligan improves to 13-20 overall.
