Buffaloes baseball splits with Montreat

Montreat, N.C. (April 26, 2013) --- The Milligan College baseball team split their final Appalachian Athletic Conference doubleheader of the season with Montreat College on Friday afternoon in Montreat, N.C. The Buffaloes scored four runs in the 10th inning to take a 4-0 win in game one, but was unable to rally in the second game as they fell 5-1.

In the first game, neither team was able to put a run on the board in the scheduled distance. The Buffaloes finally broke onto the board in the 10th when Tyree Jeffries (Jackson, Tenn.) drove in Corey McPherson (Johnson City, Tenn.) and Luke Kirk (Gate City, Va.) for two Milligan runs. Brandon Malone (Maryville, Tenn.) secured the win for the Buffaloes with a two-RBI single, and Milligan clamped down defensively to secure the win.

On the mound, Ethan Fleenor (Johnson City, Tenn.) picked up the win. Fleenor allowed just five hits with two strikeouts in nine innings of work. Malone led the way at the plate as he went 2-for-5 with two RBIs.

The second game saw the Cavaliers jump out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Milligan put a run on the board in the fourth inning when Jeffries scored off a Malone single. However, Montreat added two runs in the fifth inning, and the Buffaloes were unable to close the gap.

Jeffries finished the game 1-for-1, while Kirk was 2-for-4 at the plate. Jake Watts (Boone, N.C.) was handed the loss as he allowed three earned runs on six hit in four innings of work.

Milligan finishes the regular season with a 24-23 overall record and 11-13 mark in AAC action.

The Buffaloes will begin the 2013 AAC Baseball Tournament on Tuesday, April 30, at Hunter Wright Stadium in Kingsport, Tenn. The bracket for the tournament is slated to be released on Sunday afternoon.
