Buffaloes baseball sweeps past St. Andrews

Milligan College, Tenn. (April 6, 2013) --- The Milligan College baseball team picked up a pair of 3-1 victories over St. Andrews University in an Appalachian Athletic Conference doubleheader at Anglin Field on Saturday afternoon.
 
   In the first game, the Knights jumped out early as they took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. The Buffaloes responded as Sam Tarlton (Chuckey, Tenn.) scored off a Tyree Jeffries (Jackson, Tenn.) sacrifice fly to tie the game at 1-1 after an inning of play.
 
   Milligan scored the final two runs of the game in the bottom of the second as Blake Buck (Maryville, Tenn.) and Hunter Carpenter (Sneedville, Tenn.) crossed home plate off a Corey McPherson (Johnson City, Tenn.) single. Neither team was able to add a run in the remainder of the game as the Buffaloes captured the victory.
 
   Tarlton was 2-for-3 at the plate, while McPherson was 1-for-3 with two RBIs. Jeffries ended the game 1-for-2 with a RBI.
 
   On the mound, Ethan Fleenor (Johnson City, Tenn.) picked up the win. Fleenor allowed one earned run on four hits with five strikeouts in six innings of work.
 
   The second game saw neither team able to plate a run in the first two innings. The Buffaloes struck first in the bottom of the third as Logan Suggs (Newport, Tenn. scored on a fielder's choice, and then Tarlton drove in Jeffries with a single to give Milligan a 2-0 lead.
 
   St. Andrews scored in the bottom of the fourth. However, Milligan answered the Knights' run as Cody Hyder (Johnson City, Tenn.) scored off a sacrifice hit by Tarlton. Milligan kept the Knights off the bases in the closing innings to preserve the victory.
 
   Suggs went 1-for-1 in his first collegiate start with a run scored. Brett Mercurio (West Palm Beach, Fla.) was 1-for-3 with a double, and Tarlton recorded two RBIs.
 
   Brent Whittington (North Wilkesboro, N.C.) picked up the win on the mound. In six innings of work, Whittington allowed one run on six hits with seven strikeouts.
 
   Milligan improves to 17-17 overall and 7-7 in AAC action.
 
   The Buffaloes and Knights will wrap up the three-game series on Sunday, April 7, with a nine-inning game at Anglin Field. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
