Milligan baseball sees season end in AAC tournament

Kingsport, Tenn. (May 2, 2013) --- The Milligan College baseball team was unable to make a comeback on Thursday as they fell 9-3 to Reinhardt University in the Appalachian Athletic Conference Baseball Tournament at Hunter Wright Stadium in Kingsport, Tenn.
 
   After neither team was able to score in the first inning, the Eagles broke on to the board with a single run in the bottom of the second. The Buffaloes saw Cody Hyder (Johnson City, Tenn.) reach base to open the third inning, but they were unable to plate the run. Reinhardt extended their lead with two runs in the home side of the inning to take a 3-0 lead after three complete innings.
 
   The Buffaloes broke onto the board in the top of the fourth inning as Luke Kirk (Gate City, Va.) crossed home plate on a Brandon Malone (Maryville, Tenn.) single. However, the Eagles responded with three runs to increase their lead to 6-1. Neither team was able to get anything going in the fifth inning.
 
   Milligan struck again in the top of the sixth inning as Malone drove Tyree Jeffries (Jackson, Tenn.) across the plate. Chavez Golden (Oak Ridge, Tenn.) continued the inning as he scored Malone to cut the Milligan gap to 6-3. After a scoreless seventh inning, the Buffaloes stranded two runs in the top of the eighth, and the Eagles extended their lead with three runs in the bottom of the eighth. Milligan was unable to mount a rally in the ninth inning.
 
   Hyder led the way as he went 3-for-4, while Jeffries was 2-for-3. Kirk and Malone both added two hits apiece.
 
   Brent Whittington (North Wilkesboro, N.C.) was handed the loss on the mound. In three innings of work, Whittington allowed four runs on five hits.
 
   The Buffaloes finish up the 2013 season with a 25-25 overall record and 11-13 in AAC play. Milligan will lose four seniors to graduation in Jackson Farmer (Johnson City, Tenn.), Sean Robinson (Knoxville, Tenn.), Jeffries and Hyder.
