Buffaloes volleyball drops two games in Florida

Babson Park, Fla. (Aug. 24, 2013) --- The Milligan College volleyball team came up short in a pair of games on Saturday afternoon against Webber University and Ave Marie University in Babson Park, Fla. The Buffaloes lost a 3-2 thriller to Ave Marie in the first match of the day, and then fell 3-0 to Webber to close out the day.

In the first match of the day against the Gyrenes, the Buffaloes were edged 26-24 in the first set. Milligan was unable to pull ahead late in the second set as they fell 26-24, but pulled away to take a 25-16 victory in the third set. The Buffaloes continued to hold the momentum as they forced a fifth set with a 25-22 fourth set victory. In the decisive fifth set, the Buffaloes were unable to score a pair of late points as they fell 15-13.

Jessica Davenport (Cleveland, Tenn.) recorded 48 assists and 16 digs, while senior Kylie Whaley (Maryville, Tenn.) had 20 kills. Kaitlyn Round (Billings, Mont.) recorded 24 digs. Freshman Samantha Bruinius (Chicago, Ill.) tallied 18 digs and 13 kills, while Savannah Benton (Kingsport, Tenn.) had three solo blocks. Heather Harvey (Bristol, Tenn.) ended the match with 12 digs and two aces.

In the second game, the Buffaloes jumped out to a 9-5 lead in the first set. However, the Warriors used a late run to take the set by a score of 25-20. After the teams traded points to open the second set, Milligan was unable to answer a Webber run as they dropped the set 25-16, and the Buffaloes were unable to extend the match to a fourth set as they fell 25-20 in the third.

Round recorded 13 digs, while Harvey and Davenport had eight assists apiece. Freshman Grace Ann Moorhouse (Morristown, Tenn.) finished the match with 12 digs. Whaley and Bruinius had six and four kills, respectively.

The Buffaloes fall to 0-3 on the season.

The Buffaloes return to action on Friday, Aug. 30, as they host the two-day Milligan Mountain Madness tournament inside Steve Lacy Fieldhouse. Milligan will open the event at 3 p.m., against St. Catherine's University.
