Milligan women's soccer sees season opener end in tie

Milligan College, Tenn. (Aug. 27, 2013) --- The Milligan College women's soccer team saw their 2013 season opener end in a 1-1 stalemate with Southern Wesleyan University on Tuesday night at Anglin Field.
 
   The Buffaloes struck early as Teagan Wood (Kingsport, Tenn.) beat the SWU defenders to score the first goal of the season in the 13th minute. Milligan continued to control the match, but was unable to add to the lead as shots by Keri Harrison (Kingsport, Tenn.) and Christine Hardin (Elizabethton, Tenn.) went wide of the goal. The Lady Warriors evened the score in the 43rd minute when Ruva Chimedza scored an unassisted goal.
 
   The second half saw Milligan continue to attack as Rebecca Buchanan (Knoxville, Tenn.), Wood and Hardin all saw shots saved by the Lady Warriors' keeper in the first 15 minutes of the frame. The Buffaloes continued to press, but they were unable to break onto the board in regulation.
 
   In the first overtime, Buchanan was unable to connect on a pair of shots in the 93rd and 95th minute. Southern Wesleyan nearly ended the game with a goal in the 97th minute, but freshman Charlotte Stephens (Grays, England) recorded a save to force a second overtime. The final 10-minute frame saw Wood narrowly miss sending the Buffaloes to victory in the final two minutes as the game ended in a 1-1 tie.
 
   The Buffaloes recorded 20 shots on goal while limiting the Lady Warriors to eight total shots. Defensively, Stephens recorded five saves for Milligan in her collegiate debut.
 
   The Buffaloes return to action on Friday, Aug. 30, as they travel to USC-Beaufort. Match time in Beaufort, S.C., is set for 4 p.m.
