Milligan College, Tenn. (Sept. 4, 2013) --- Anthony Matekenya (Harare, Zimbawe) scored three goals as the Milligan men's soccer team defeated Virginia Intermont 3-2 in Appalachian Athletic Conference play on Wednesday night at Anglin Field.

  In the first half, Milligan was unable to connect on an early shot by Andre Ottoni (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil). Matekenya scored his first goal of the night as he beat the Cobra defender to give the Buffaloes a 1-0 lead in the 16th minute. Milligan saw shots from Jonathon Colson (Johnson City, Tenn.), Nimely Robertson (Johnson City, Tenn.) and Ryan Reilly (Maryville, Tenn.) go wide of the net as the Buffaloes took a 1-0 lead into the half.

  Virginia Intermont struck quickly in the second half as Austin Dunleavy scored in the 51st minute with an assist from Matthew Carragher. The teams traded shots until Matekenya scored his second goal of the night off a free kick in the 68th minute to give Milligan a 2-1 lead.

  The Cobras, however, struck again in the 81st minute as Francisco Ferman scored off an assist from Austin Dunleavy. The Buffaloes wasted no time as Matekenya kicked the game winner of a deflection in the 85th minute. From there, Milligan kept Virginia Intermont at bay to preserve the victory.

  Defensively, Dan Ball (Chatham, England) recorded five saves in a complete game effort. Milligan held a 25-17 shot advantage in the match.

  With the win, Milligan improves to 1-2 overall and starts AAC play with a 1-0 record.

  The Buffaloes return to action on Saturday, Sept. 7, as they travel to Southern Wesleyan University for a nonconference match. Match time is set for 7 p.m., in Central, S.C.
