BRISTOL, Va. (Jan. 8, 2014) â€" A 30-point night for
Kayla Kelly and a 21-point effort by
Hayley Wyrick was not enough as Milligan women's basketball dropped a tough road decision, 93-87 in overtime, to Virginia Intermont Wednesday.
Milligan dropped to 10-7 (6-3 AAC) while Virginia Intermont improved to 7-9 (3-6 AAC).
The Lady Buffaloes led 77-71 with four minutes left in regulation before watching VIC forward Rainey Story score the Lady Cobras' next 20 points, spanning the end of the second half and all but the final 34 seconds of overtime.
Story, who finished with a game-high 37 points, capped a 9-3 VIC run at the end of regulation by scoring the game-tying basket at the 23-second mark. In overtime, she put the Lady Cobras on top for good with a basket at the 4:27 mark.
Despite losing the late lead, Milligan had its chances in the closing minute. With the game knotted at 78, Kelly put the edge back in the Lady Buffaloes' favor with a two-pointer with 53 seconds remaining. Even once Story scored the basket to tie, Milligan had the final chance on its last possession, ending in an
Allison Jones miss at the buzzer.
In overtime, Story missed only once as the Lady Cobras outscored Milligan 13-7. Story was 15-of-21 in her team's fifth victory at home.
