Milligan University

Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Balanced attack gives volleyball easy win

WEST POINT, Ga. (Oct. 11, 2014) â€" It didn't take much more than an hour for the Milligan College volleyball team to put away Point University Saturday morning in an Appalachian Athletic Conference match. Samantha Bruinius led a group of five Buffaloes with five or more kills en route to Milligan's fourth straight league victory, a 3-0 (25-16, 25-15, 25-9) shellacking on the road.

Milligan, which earned a kill roughly every other minute for the duration of the match, improved to 13-12 (7-3 AAC) where the Buffaloes stand in a tie for fourth place. Milligan is currently one game out of second place (Union). Point fell to a league-worst 4-16 (0-9 AAC).

Bruinius registered seven kills and only one error on 15 chances (.400). She was followed by freshman Marissa Langford's six kills and Bailey Thomas, Jenna Conkin and Emilee Linkous who all had five kills. Conkin and Linkous both earned five kills on nine attack attempts while committing only one error. They finished with an attack percentage of .444.

Junior Jessica Davenport earned 24 assists, three service aces and three kills to go along with two digs and a solo block.

Point kept the match close through the first 20 rallies of game one, but a 5-0 run beginning with the score even at 11 helped Milligan run away with the opening game. Back-to-back kills from Langford followed by back-to-back service aces from Linkous were instrumental during that run as Milligan extended the lead to 16-11. The Buffaloes then closed out game one by winning the last seven points.

Game two was more of the same as Point stayed close through the first few rallies until a 9-1 run, lowlighted by seven Skyhawk errors, made it 13-7.

Milligan never trailed in the final game, leaping out to a 9-3 lead before winning 16 of the last 22 points to take game three, 25-9.

After seven straight matches on the road, Milligan will finally return home for a three-match homestand beginning Tuesday, Oct. 14 against Montreat College (4-18, 3-7 AAC).
