MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. (Oct. 25, 2014) â€"
Tapiwa Kaseke served up another game-winner Saturday evening in front a huge homecoming crowd, giving the Milligan College men's soccer team the win over the University of the Cumberlands, 1-0.
ÂÂ
The Buffaloes (6-7-2, 3-5 Appalachian Athletic Conference) stand within a game and a half of three teams in the AAC as the postseason draws closer, and next week's game against Tennessee Wesleyan College (8-6-1, 4-3 AAC) could prove to be the deciding factor for where the Buffs will appear in the postseason tournament.
ÂÂ
Even though Cumberlands is not an AAC opponent, Milligan played against them with the same determination that they have showed in the last two weeks against both Union College and No. 18 Reinhardt University.
ÂÂ
Both teams played strong defense throughout the match. As the ball moved from one side to the other, it was almost more common to see it stolen on a tackle or a quick move than to see it passed to another player. Whenever a shot was actually taken, it was usually taken from midfield rather than in the box, which resulted in a low shot-on-goal average.
ÂÂ
However, the Buffs finally found the net only a minute and a half into the second half. Much like in the match against Union, a
Lewis Grant corner kick found its way into the possession of Kaseke, and after a Cumberlands player blocked his first shot, the junior striker took a second to score the winning goal.
ÂÂ
On the other side of the field,
Dan Ball took away every chance that the Patriots had at scoring. The Patriots outshot the Buffs 14-10, but Ball made four saves to halt their chances of a comeback, including a picture-perfect diving save on a shot from Max Aken-Tyers late in the second half.
ÂÂ
Milligan will travel to Athens, Tennessee, to take on Tennessee Wesleyan on Wednesday, Oct. 29. This will be the Buffs final AAC matchup, but not their last challenge, as they will take on No. 11 Georgia Gwinnett College at home in their final regular season match on Saturday, Nov. 1.
