Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Woods surpasses millennial mark in opening-night blowout

MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. (Oct. 29, 2014) â€" After finishing last season with 991 career points, Mickey Woods waited over eight months to reach the millennial mark. Wednesday night in the Milligan College men's basketball team's regular season opener, he only had to wait four minutes.

With over 16 minutes left in the first half, Woods knocked down his third straight three-pointer from the top of the key to reach the prestigious milestone, and the Buffaloes ran away with a 76-44 victory over Johnson University at the Steve Lacy Fieldhouse.

"It felt really good," expressed Woods. "I just wanted to get it over with, you know, just to play the rest of the game. But I'm glad it's over."

Woods finished the game with 11 points on four-of-five shooting in nine and a half minutes of action.

The Royals made the first basket to lead 2-0, but that was the only lead they held throughout the evening, as a 3-point shot from Woods proved true only 20 seconds later. From there, the Buffaloes never trailed again, going on a 9-0 run to extend their lead, 26-12.

At halftime, Milligan led 47-24, which was in large part due to the defense who had forced 14 turnovers and blocked three shots.

"I think that we did all that we could do defensively tonight," said Head Coach Bill Robinson. "We were trying to up the tempo of the defensive a bit and really create problems. That was really beneficial for us tonight."

The Royals were unable to find an answer to the Buffs in the second half as well. Two runs of seven or more points brought the score to 75-34 where the Buffs held their largest lead of the evening (41 points).

Though the Royals started to rally, it was too late, and the Milligan took the game 76-44.

Nearly half of the points for the Buffs came from the 3-point line as they shot just at 43.4 percent throughout the game. Woods hit three 3-point attempts in a row which provided the boost he needed to break the millennial mark.

Overall, Morgan McLeod led the Buffs with 12 points while also adding four assists in the game.  Four players made six rebounds for the Buffs, including Milos Petrovic who made three steals and blocked a shot.

Milligan continues its opening week with another home game, this time against Robinson's alma mater, The King's College. The game is scheduled to take place on Halloween night (Oct. 31, 7 p.m.), so fans are encouraged to come dressed in costume. Prizes will be given for the best outfits.
