Women's basketball drops close game to No. 22 Tennessee Wesleyan

MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. (Nov. 19, 2014) â€"  Despite taking an early lead, the Milligan College women's basketball team could not withstand the streaky shooting of No. 22 Tennessee Wesleyan as they fell to the Lady Bulldogs 67-58 Wednesday evening.

"I am pleased about our approach and how we didn't give up," commented Head Coach Rich Aubrey, "We like to think that this is a characteristic of the kids in our program, and they did fight hard [tonight]. There's no question about that."

Milligan fell to 1-5 overall and 1-2 in the Appalachian Athletic Conference, while Tennessee Wesleyan continued their undefeated streak, moving to 7-0 overall and 3-0 in the AAC.

With only three lead changes in the entire first half, the Buffaloes went on a 9-2 run led by Courtney Wilson to take the lead in the opening minutes of the game.  With high defensive pressure, the Buffs were able to force 12 turnovers, which helped secure the lead for most of the half.

However in the waning minutes of the half, the Lady Bulldogs were able to capture the lead, but only for about 15 seconds. The Buffs went into halftime with a 26-25 lead, the first time this season that the Lady Bulldogs have trailed at the half.

But Milligan's lead did not last long.  The Bulldogs took the lead in the first 30 seconds of the second half and led the rest of the game. They extended their lead to as many as 16, but the Buffs were able to battle back to pull within nine points in the final minutes of the game.

It would not be enough though, as the Lady Bulldogs took the win, 67-58.

Sophomore Hayley Wyrick led the Buffs in scoring with 22 points, and Wilson had a career high 16 points, adding to her previous high of 14 which she scored two weeks ago against Asbury College.  Both Wyrick and Lindsee Price totaled six rebounds apiece, and Price led the team with a career high of six assists in the contest.

Tennessee Wesleyan outrebounded the Buffs 43-28 in the contest, as Jenna Adams recorded a double-double with 23 points and 10 rebounds. Armeka Booker nearly reached the same mark, scoring 14 points and making nine rebounds for the Lady Bulldogs.

The Buffs begin a three-game road trip, beginning with second-place Union College, who is currently receiving votes in the national top 25 poll, on Saturday, Nov. 22 at 4 p.m.  They will then face Columbia College on Nov. 25 and St. Catharine College on Dec. 1 before returning home to host the Bears of Truett-McConnell College on Wednesday, Dec. 3.
