BARBOURVILLE, Ky. (Nov. 7, 2014) â€" Despite leading for nearly 35 minutes of Friday afternoon's fast-paced and high-scoring game, the Milligan College women's basketball team saw a 10-point second-half lead vanish and fell to Asbury University 89-86 in the first game of the Union Classic, hosted by Union College.
ÂÂ
Milligan (0-2) took the early lead on a
Hayley Wyrick 3-pointer within the first four minutes and never trailed again until Asbury's Brittany Warren capped a 6-0 Eagles run with an and-one to put Asbury on top by three in the closing seconds. All six points in that run were scored by Warren as she knocked down a game-tying 3-pointer with less than 90 seconds left before converting the old-fashioned 3-point play with four seconds left.
"This was a very disappointing outcome today," Head Coach
Rich Aubrey said, "but our performance was much better today. It was just one of those games in which the team that made the last play was going to win. They made the last play."
ÂÂ
Asbury's 6-0 run came on the tail end of a 25-13 run over the last seven and a half minutes where the Eagles erased a nine-point deficit. The Buffaloes was 3-of-9 during that final stretch and missed their last four shots from the field. Meanwhile, Asbury was 8-of-10 in the last seven minutes, missing only twice on 3-point attempts. The Eagles also made each of their last nine free throws.
ÂÂ
The game featured roughly 150 total possessions and was the first time Milligan scored 80 or more points since beating Montreat College 83-74 in the opening round of last year's Appalachian Athletic Conference tournament. Wyrick finished with a game-high 26 of Friday's 86 points, while three other Buffaloes also reached double figures.
ÂÂ
Chelsey Weddle scored 17 points to go alongside 10 rebounds for the senior's first double-double of the season, a feat she accomplished five times last season; freshman
Courtney Wilson reached double figures for the second time in as many games; and
Lindsee Price was a rebound shy of a double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds. Wilson's bucket just outside of two minutes concluded the scoring for the Buffaloes.
ÂÂ
Milligan was 31-for-70 (44.3%) from the floor but struggled from beyond the arc, converting only 6-of-25 attempts (24.0%). The Buffs made only one 3-pointer, on nine attempts, in the second half.
ÂÂ
Catie Fletcher led Asbury with 21 points while Warren followed close behind with 19. Warren was 4-of-8 from beyond the arc, and the Eagles as a team were 9-of-29 (31.0%) from downtown.
ÂÂ
Milligan has one more game scheduled at the Union Classic, a Saturday matchup with Midway College beginning at 2 p.m. The Buffaloes will be back home the following Saturday, Nov. 15 against St. Andrews University in a women's and men's AAC doubleheader starting at 2 p.m.
