LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. (Feb. 21, 2014) â€" Four runs in the fourth and five in the fifth were enough to put an end to the Milligan College baseball team's three-game winning streak Friday afternoon as Covenant College defeated the Buffaloes 9-1 in the first of a three-game set.
ÂÂ
Milligan (3-3) gave up one less run in the loss than it had given up in all five previous games (37 innings) of this season. Covenant improved to 2-0 with the victory.
ÂÂ
Milligan committed four errors in the fourth inning alone, allowing the Scots to break open the scoring and all but put the game away. The bulk of the damage was done by Will Carlton's two-run homer to left with one out in the inning.
ÂÂ
Starting pitcher
Tyler Wilson, who was lifted at the end of the fourth, was dealt his first loss of the year (1-1). The left-hander struck out four and walked one but gave up six hits and four runs (three earned).
ÂÂ
Luke Kirk (1-for-4),
Edwin Soto (1-for-3) and
Dustin Clawson (1-for-1) were the only Buffs to record hits. Soto scored Milligan's lone run on an RBI-groundout by senior
Hunter Carpenter in the top of the fifth.
ÂÂ
In the bottom half of the fifth, Covenant put six straight men on base and added five runs on four hits.
ÂÂ
The two clubs will finish the series with a doubleheader scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 22 at 12 p.m. Milligan returns home to Anglin Field March 8 for the conference opener against Union College.
