Women's hoops falls to Montreat in tale of two halves

MONTREAT, N.C. (Feb. 22, 2014) â€" In the final game of the regular season, Milligan College women's basketball fell victim to Montreat College's strong second half in an 84-75 losing effort Saturday night.

Milligan, which beat Montreat 83-66 at home earlier this season, finished its 2013-14 regular season campaign with a record of 16-12 (12-8 AAC). The Buffaloes are locked into the four seed for the upcoming conference tournament. Montreat improved to 16-14 (11-10 AAC).

Milligan led by 11 (43-32) at the halftime break but was outscored 52-32 in the second half. The Cavs used an 11-2 run beginning at the 13:25 mark to force the first tie of the game since their opening possession. After trading baskets over the ensuing two and a half minutes, Montreat's Janae Strong gave her team the lead for good with a basket just outside of eight minutes. Montreat then extended its lead with a 13-2 run.

Milligan closed the gap to three with a bucket from Robyn Anthony with under three minutes, but the Cavs would grab the final six points of the contest.

Milligan was led by Hayley Wyrick's 20 points, 13 of which she scored in the first half.

Four other Buffs reached double figures, including Chelsey Weddle who finished with 14 points and nine rebounds and Kayla Kelly who posted a double-double (10 points, 10 rebounds).

Montreat was led on senior night by junior Xandi Gellman. Gellman had 20 points and 12 rebounds. Seniors Kim Henderson (19 points), Strong (15 points) and Kaitlyn Clontz (14 points) also contributed in major ways for the Cavs.

With the regular season over, Milligan will next be in action Thursday during the AAC conference tournament held at the MeadowView Marriott in Kingsport, Tenn.
