MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. (March 19, 2014) â€" Sophomore right-handed pitcher
Codie Campbell threw the first seven innings of the Milligan College baseball team's eight-hit shutout Wednesday as the Buffaloes beat Southern Wesleyan University 4-0 under the lights of Anglin Field.
ÂÂ
Milligan (12-8, 5-4 AAC) won its sixth straight and shut out its opposition for the sixth time this season. Southern Wesleyan lost its seventh in a row, falling to 10-20.
ÂÂ
Campbell, the fourth consecutive Milligan starter to turn in a quality start, allowed six hits and a walk while striking out five. Campbell (1-0) never had more than a one-run lead and worked through allowing the potential go-ahead run to reach scoring position three times.
ÂÂ
After Campbell's departure, Southern Wesleyan made things interesting in the eighth and ninth, threatening to cut into Milligan's 4-0 lead by loading the bases in both frames. In the eighth, it all started with two out and the bases clear. Milligan reliever
Corey Jenkins gave up a single then hit two batters but escaped on a fly-out to center.
ÂÂ
An inning later,
Jake Howell saw the tying run come to the plate when an error, a walk and a base hit loaded the bases with one out. Howell managed to escape by inducing a pop out then fooling Warrior cleanup man Julio Lara for a strikeout.
ÂÂ
Jenkins and Howell struck out one apiece.
ÂÂ
Milligan broke the scoreless deadlock in the sixth when
Corey McPherson delivered a two-out single to right, scoring
Tyler Weir. In the seventh, Weir had an RBI-groundout, and
Sam Tarlton drove in a pair with a single to center.
ÂÂ
Luke Kirk and
Hunter Carpenter were 3-for-5 on the day while
Edwin Soto was 2-for-3.
ÂÂ
Southern Wesleyan's Andrew Howard finished with three hits (3-for-5). SWU starting pitcher Tim O'Callaghan suffered the loss. He struck out five and walked two but gave up 10 hits and an earned run.
ÂÂ
Milligan will be back on Anglin Field over the weekend, hosting AAC foe Reinhardt University (22-9, 7-2 AAC) in a three-game series. The teams will play a doubleheader Saturday at 2 p.m. and a single game Sunday at 2 p.m.ÂÂ
