Ninth-inning rally falls short; baseball loses to VI

BRISTOL, Va. (March 2, 2014) â€" Milligan College baseball scored three runs in the top of the ninth and had the bases loaded with two out but could not overcome Virginia Intermont in the series finale, losing 7-6 Sunday.

Milligan (5-6, 1-2 AAC), which defeated Intermont (5-8, 2-1 AAC) in a similar fashion in Saturday's doubleheader nightcap, lost the series two games to one.

Milligan led 3-1 following the seventh-inning stretch but allowed the Cobras to tie with back-to-back two-out singles in the seventh then take the lead with four runs on one hit in the eighth. Intermont's four-run eighth was aided by two Milligan errors.

In the top of the ninth, extra-base hits by Ernesto Fernandez and Brandon Malone made it 7-5 and brought the tying run to the plate with no one out. A relief pitcher and two batters later, Chavez Golden singled and Blake Buck and Corey McPherson walked to load the bases and bring the score to 7-6.

Virginia Intermont reliever Derrick Murphy, the Cobras third pitcher of the inning, forced Sam Tarlton into a ground ball to end the game.

Luke Kirk, Fernandez and Malone all finished with two hits and an RBI. Fernandez also scored two runs.

Milligan starting pitcher Tyler Wilson tossed a gem in his second start of the season. He threw 6.2 innings and did not allow a hit until he had one out in the fifth. VI finally managed to break open the scoring on the left-hander with an unearned run in the sixth. In all, Wilson scattered three hits and three walks while striking out four. He gave up three runs (two earned).

Milligan will head to Berea College Wednesday, March 5 for a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m. The Buffaloes will be back home Saturday and Sunday, March 8-9 for a three-game set against Union College.
