Game Recap: Softball |

Softball wins sixth straight with nonconference sweep

MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. (March 24, 2014) â€" The offense was quiet, but Kimberly Robinson, Jessica Goodson, Chancli Connatser, and the Milligan College softball team's defense didn't mind as they held visiting University of the Cumberlands to two runs over 14 innings in a doubleheader sweep at Anglin Field Monday.

Milligan (11-8, 8-0 AAC) blanked Cumberlands (8-15, 5-5 MSC) 3-0 in game one before thwarting a seventh-inning rally in game two, winning 3-2.

Connatser (6-4) threw all seven innings of the second game and notched her sixth complete game of the season. The senior struck out three and walked three while holding the Patriots to six hits and two runs (one earned). Connatser didn't allow more than one hit in any inning until the top of the seventh. With the Buffaloes up 3-1, she gave up a one-out double which scored one and put the tying run on third. Connatser ended the threat by inducing a line-out to second and a ground ball which she fielded herself.

In game one, Robinson (2-1) and Goodson (1 save) combined for the team's second shutout of the season. Robinson went the first four, allowing two hits and two walks while striking out six before handing it off to Goodson for the final three. Goodson allowed two hits and no walks and struck out three.

Taylor McGinnis had the winning RBI in game one, scoring Natalie Sheffey on a two-out single in the home half of the first, but Kacie Skeen provided the breathing room with her first collegiate homer, a two-run shot, in the second.

In game two, Makenzie Lilley homered to straight-away center in the second, giving the Buffs a lead they did not relinquish. It came after Cumberlands lead-off hitter Kayla Crisp drove in an unearned run on an infield single to tie the game in the top of the second.

Krista Lambdin led the quiet Milligan offense with two-hit efforts in both games. She was 2-for-4 in the first game and 2-for-3 with a run in the second. Robinson and McGinnis also were 2-for-3 in game two.

Milligan will return to conference action Wednesday, March 26 at Virginia Intermont College (19-12, 10-4 AAC) in Bristol, Va. The Buffaloes come back to Anglin Field the following Sunday for a doubleheader with Columbia College (17-9, 5-5 AAC).
