Friday 'good' to Buffs in sweep

MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. (April 18, 2014) â€" Chancli Connatser hit a walk-off RBI-single in the seventh inning of game two to help the Milligan College softball team complete a doubleheader sweep of Bryan College, 7-3 and 3-2, at Anglin Field on Good Friday.

Milligan concluded its regular season runner-up in the Appalachian Athletic Conference with a record of 20-15 (16-4 AAC). It marked the seventh time in the last eight years Milligan reached 20 or more wins.

Bryan fell to 25-20 (12-6 AAC) and will be either the three or the four seed in the conference tournament.

The Buffaloes, the two seed, will face Tennessee Wesleyan College, the seven seed, in their opening-round game next Tuesday in Kingsport, Tenn. Milligan swept TWC 14-6 and 6-1 on the road back in March. First pitch of Tuesday's game is scheduled for 3 p.m.

Connatser, in addition to the walk-off single, fired a complete game in the nightcap. She struck out three with no walks over seven innings and allowed eight hits and only two earned runs. Connatser improved to 12-8 on the afternoon as her team-leading 10th complete game of the season came on the heels of a four-inning, two-hit winning effort in the opener.

In all, Connatser threw 11 innings with 10 hits, four runs, two earned runs, three walks and six K's.

Krista Lambdin and Natalie Sheffey provided the offense in game one. Lambdin, on Bryan starting pitcher Sarah Hundley's 43rd pitch of the second inning, roped a two-out, bases-loaded double through the left side, scoring three to give Milligan the lead. The inning featured a 10-pitch walk drawn by Jessica Connatser followed immediately by an 11-pitch at-bat which ended with Jessica Wheelock singling to load the bases.

Fittingly enough, Lambdin won an 11-pitch at-bat with a single up the middle to start Milligan's rally in the final inning of game two. She was the winning run two batters later.

After Lambdin's three-RBI double in the second inning of game one, Sheffey gave the Buffs three insurance runs with a homer to straight-away center in the fourth. Lambdin and Wheelock finished game one with two hits apiece while Lambdin and Sheffey had three RBI's and a run scored.

Jessica Goodson threw the final three innings and picked up the save in game one.

Game two's leaders came from the top of the order as Lambdin, Sheffey, and C. Connatser were all 2-for-4. Lambdin was the one to touch the plate for all three of Milligan's runs.

With the regular season complete, Milligan will head to the AAC tournament next week in Kingsport, Tenn. The Buffaloes first meeting will be against Tennessee Wesleyan College (13-25, 9-11 AAC) Tuesday at 3 p.m.
