Seniors lead baseball to series-opening win over Montreat

MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. (April 25, 2014) â€" Ethan Fleenor and a handful of other Milligan College seniors started their final home series with one of the most emphatic league wins of the season, beating Montreat College 10-3 Friday night at Anglin Field.

Fleenor struck one seven and walked one in a nine-inning complete game six-hitter while fellow seniors Luke Kirk, Corey McPherson and Hunter Carpenter each had a hit, RBI and a run in the three-game series opener. Milligan improved to 22-22 (12-12 AAC).

Fleenor, in what was his final start on his home field, grew more efficient as the evening wore on. His only real blemish came in the top of the first when he allowed a lead-off double come around to score on a sacrifice bunt and an RBI-groundout. He then gave up an unearned run in the fourth and a run on one hit in the fifth but settled down to face the minimum over the last three frames. He also struck out two in the final inning.

It was Fleenor's fourth complete game of the season and second in a nine-inning game. Fleenor also matched his season high in strikeouts with seven.

McPherson celebrated the opener of his final home series with a three-hit night (3-for-5), tagging three Montreat pitchers with a hit. His two-run double in the eighth inning rounded out the scoring in Milligan's eighth double-digit scoring effort of the season.

Tyler Weir gave Milligan the lead for good in the third inning with a bases-loaded single, and Sam Tarlton put the game away for the Buffs three batters later as he delivered a two-out, bases-loaded triple to right field that made it 5-1.

Milligan and Montreat will conclude the series with a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 1 p.m.
