KINGSPORT, Tenn. (May 6, 2014) â€" Outside of the fifth and sixth innings,
Ethan Fleenor held the Point University Skyhawks to one hit and no runs, but the Milligan College baseball team was beaten 3-0 in the second round of the AAC tournament winners bracket Tuesday evening at Hunter Wright Stadium.
ÂÂ
With the loss, Milligan (23-26, 12-15 AAC) must turn around Tuesday morning to face Reinhardt University in an elimination game at 10 a.m. Milligan needs a win over Reinhardt and two wins over Point in order to advance to the championship game.
ÂÂ
Fleenor was the model of efficiency as he took a no-hitter into the fifth inning and wound up tossing a complete game six-hitter where he gave up only three runs. It was Fleenor's fifth complete game of the season, fourth complete game in his last five starts, and third time he threw a complete game across nine innings.
ÂÂ
Fleenor first encountered trouble in the fifth when a one-out single, Reinhardt's first of the game, by Trevor Maxey led to the game's first run. Maxey went to second on a wild pitch then scored on a single up the middle from Kevin Dawkins, who was batting in the eight hole.
ÂÂ
Point (30-23, 14-13 AAC) added another run to make it 2-0 in the inning as Dawkins stole second, moved to third on a groundout by Jeffery Ginn, then scored on a two-out single. The single came off the bat of centerfielder Trey Chambers who legged out an infield hit, beating
Luke Kirk's long throw from short.
ÂÂ
In the sixth, Fleenor hit the leadoff man before giving up a single and sacrifice bunt which put runners on second and third with one out. A batter later, Point had the bases loaded and looked poised to put together a big inning, but Fleenor managed to escape the inning with only a wild pitch producing a run.
ÂÂ
Fleenor's only conceded hit outside of the fifth or sixth came with two out in the eighth, an inning that was bookended by a perfect seventh and perfect ninth. The right-hander's final line included six hits, three (earned) runs, three walks and seven strikeouts. He threw 113 pitches.
ÂÂ
Milligan struggled offensively with only seven hits but had its chances to take the lead early on. In the fourth,
Chavez Golden had a two-out double that moved
Devan Watts, pinch running for
Brandon Malone's single, to third. Both were left stranded in the inning.
ÂÂ
An inning later, Kirk hit a two-out double that started a would-be rally, but the senior was nabbed at the plate on
Corey McPherson's ensuing base hit to left.
ÂÂ
Kirk, McPherson and Golden each finished with two hits. Point's Maxey was the only Skyhawk with more than one hit as he finished 2-for-3.
ÂÂ
Starting pitcher Harrison Pollard struck out five over seven shutout innings and was the winning pitcher. The left-hander improved to 3-8 without issuing a walk. Reliever Travis Tarleton picked up his league-leading 11th save of the season.
