Volleyball opens season with split at Dalton State

DALTON, Ga. (August 23, 2014) â€" The season-opening weekend saw Milligan College's women's volleyball team defeat Tennessee Temple University 3-0 (25-23, 25-20, 25-19) but fall to Dalton State College 3-1 (25-20, 23-25, 25-13, 25-19) Saturday afternoon.
 
Milligan (1-1) was led by freshman Marissa Langford who registered 20 kills and an attack percentage of .326 across the two matches. With the help of junior setter Jessica Davenport's 36 assists in the opening match, Langford tallied eight kills against Tennessee Temple, helping Milligan put the Lady Crusaders away in three swift sets.
 
Langford and Davenport posted similar numbers against host Dalton State, compiling 12 kills and 37 assists, respectively, in the four-game losing effort to the Roadrunners.
 
Four other Buffaloes had five or more kills against Dalton State, including senior Kayla Moore who recorded seven. Samantha Bruinius, who had 13 kills in a four-game victory against Dalton State last season, finished with five kills.
 
Milligan will continue the season with the seventh annual Mountain Madness tournament next Friday-Saturday, Aug. 29-30. Teams to be featured in the tournament include Tennessee Wesleyan College, Trinity International University, Hannibal-LaGrange College and Asbury University.
