Davenport, Bruinius lead Buffs in win over Brenau

MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. (Oct. 13, 2015) â€" Jessica Davenport recorded a career high in assists for four-set matches to help Samantha Bruinius match her career high of 17 kills, and the Milligan College volleyball team defeated Brenau University 3-1 (25-17, 28-26, 22-25, 26-24) Tuesday night at Steve Lacy Fieldhouse.

Davenport and Bruinius were key components to several Milligan (12-10, 7-4 Appalachian Athletic Conference) runs throughout the victory, most notably an 11-2 run the Buffs used to close out the match. Facing a 22-15 deficit and on the brink of letting Brenau claw back from a two-set hole, Bruinius recorded the first of five straight Milligan points with her 17th kill of the match.

Jadin Foster and Marissa Langford followed with kills on the next two points, a Bruinius service ace made it 22-19, and Langford added another kill to cut it to two before a Brenau timeout.

Milligan was on the ropes a few points later when Brenau scored to make it 24-23, marking the second set to feature a set point for Brenau that Milligan would go on to win. Langford had the answer both times with kills to even things up.

In the second set, Bruinius answered Langford's game-evening kill with back-to-back kills which closed out the set. They came after Milligan answered an 18-14 deficit with a 6-0 run to take the lead.

Langford finished with 15 kills and an attack percentage of .303 to go along with five digs, a solo block and an assisted block. One of her assisted blocks came at 24-24 in the final set, helping Milligan go ahead for the final time.

Davenport's 49 assists were 10 more than her previous best in four-setters. The senior added two aces and five digs.

Up next, Milligan will be back home on Friday, Oct. 16, for an AAC matchup with Point University at 6:30 p.m. It will be the first of six more consecutive home matches.
