Women's basketball uses second-quarter surge to improve to 6-0

BARBOURVILLE, Ky. (Nov. 14, 2015) â€" After entering the second quarter with a five-point lead thanks to an 8-2 run to close the first quarter, the Milligan College women's basketball team used a 22-6 run to pull away from the Midway University Eagles and earn an 84-55 victory Saturday afternoon at Union College's Robsion Arena.

With the win, Milligan continued its impressive winning streak to tip off the season, and is now 6-0 after winning its second game against Midway (0-6) this week and coming out on top in both games of the Union College Classic this weekend. The Eagles lost by 15 to No. 19 Union College on Friday night.

Hayley Wyrick again led the Buffaloes in points with 16 while shooting 50 percent from the field (6-12). Kelly Barnett was next in scoring for Milligan with 11 points on 4-6 shooting from the field. Sarah Robinson added nine points and game-highs in both rebounds (nine) and blocks (three), and Andi Lamb dished a game-high five assists. The Buffs also had a solid team win for the second straight game as 14 players entered the scoring column and nine players had three or more rebounds.

Milligan trailed four times early at 2-0, 3-2, 5-4, 7-6 and 9-8 before its run at the end of the first quarter, and never trailed again for the final 23 minutes of the game. Allison Jones, Robinson and Barnett each provided baskets during the Buffs' run at the end of the quarter, while Lamb added two free throws for the final tallies of the frame.

Milligan's decisive stretch to open the second quarter was highlighted by six points from Wyrick and five from Courtney Wilson, while five other players, Lamb, Morgan Gose , Barnett, Robinson and Lindsee Price (3), each added points in the run.

The Eagles never got closer than 19 in the second half, which they accomplished five times in the third quarter before Milligan scored seven straight points to expand its lead to 27 thanks to two baskets by Mackenzie Raizor and Barnett, and a 3-pointer by Gose. Milligan's largest lead of the game came with only 1:35 left to play as Megan Pietrowski hit two free throws and Savannah Raizor netted her second basket of the game to make it 81-51.

Midway was led by a game-high 26 points from Courtney Pfister, who also had a team-high six boards, while Hristina Ostojic added nine points.

Next up for the Buffs will be the start of conference play as Milligan travels to Athens, Tennessee, to battle No. 23 Tennessee Wesleyan College on Wednesday, Nov. 18, before welcoming St. Andrews University to the Steve Lacy Fieldhouse on Saturday, Nov. 21. The game times are set for 5:30 p.m. and 2 p.m., respectively, with the men's games to follow each.
