Women's soccer falls in opening round of AAC Tournament

CLEVELAND, Ga. (Nov. 4, 2015) â€" The 10th-seeded Milligan College women's soccer team fell 2-0 to seventh-seeded Truett-McConnell College Wednesday afternoon in the opening round of the Appalachian Athletic Conference tournament.

Milligan finished the season with a 3-13-1 overall record and 2-7-1 in the AAC. Truett (10-8-1, 4-5-1 AAC) advanced to the quarterfinals of the conference tournament to face second-seeded Columbia College.

The Lady Bears began the match with a fast and furious pace, controlling both time of possession and the flow of action from the get-go. Truett fired five shots in the first three minutes and 45 seconds of action, two of which required saves by Charlotte Stephens and two of which were blocked away. Truett then had nine more shots and four corner kick opportunities in the next 19 minutes.

In an effort to keep Milligan's hopes alive, Stephens made five stops in the opening half, and finished with nine saves for the match. This was the fourth time during the current season that Stephens reached the nine-saves mark in a match, which was her career high coming into the year.

The Lady Bears scored first with 21:22 left in the first half, and did not let up, scoring again with 7:37 remaining in the half to make it 2-0 heading into the locker room.

Milligan had a chance to get on the board first as Vanessa Quinones fired a shot from near the end line to the near post that was saved by Sarah Christmas with 36:53 on the clock in the first half.

The second half was similar to the first as Truett outshot the Buffs 14-1, with Caroline Gill missing high with 32:43 remaining in the match for Milligan's final shot of the afternoon. However, the Buffs did a better job of controlling possession in the second half, leading to more chances near the Lady Bears goal.
