Women's basketball stays undefeated in AAC action

WALESKA, Ga. (Dec. 2, 2015) â€" Even after a sneaky 20-4 rally by the Lady Eagles in the fourth quarter, the Milligan College women's basketball was victorious in Appalachian Athletic Conference action over Reinhardt University, 67-58, thanks to an 18-5 run of its own to start the second half Wednesday evening at the Brown Athletic Center.

Milligan, who was receiving votes in the first NAIA regular-season coaches' poll, began the night as one of four unbeaten teams in the conference and raised its record to 10-1 overall and 4-0 in the AAC. The Buffs also snapped a three-game losing skid to the Lady Eagles (3-6, 0-3 AAC).

After leading by double digits for the majority of the first half, it took the Buffaloes scoring 11 of the first 13 and 18 of the first 23 points of the second half to pull away just far enough to hold on to the win in the final quarter.

The Buffs run to open the second half was capped by a layup from Caitlyn Cain on the feed from Lindsee Price, who lobbed the ball over the Lady Eagles defense for the score. The duo hooked up again for a bucket as Cain finished with a second straight layup to make it 51-34.

Milligan then opened the final quarter with back-to-back 3-pointers to take its largest lead of the game at 21 (59-38). From there, however, Reinhardt began to make its comeback and went on a huge 20-4 run to get within five at 63-58 and make things interesting.

The Buffs were able to finish the game off with free throws by Price and Sarah Robinson, who also started off Milligan's run after halftime with back-to-back layups, first off the pass from Price who grabbed the offensive rebound, and secondly from Allison Jones on a long pass leading to a fast break bucket. Jones then went on to hit a midrange jumper, score on a transition play after her own steal, and assist Robinson on another layup during the same run.

To start the game, the Buffs used a 14-2 stretch in the first quarter to take a 17-6 lead as Kelly Barnett scored on a transition layup to finish off the run. Milligan's largest lead of the first half came on the first basket of the second quarter as Courtney Wilson scored to make it 22-10 in favor of the Buffs, who went on the hold three more 10-point leads during the rest of the quarter.

The 58 points given up by Milligan on Wednesday marked the sixth time in the last eight games the Buffs held opponents under 60 points.

Robinson finished with 18 points on 7-13 shooting for her second straight double-digit scoring game and seventh during her freshman season. Jones shot 7-9 from the field for 14 points and her eighth double-digit scoring game and second straight as a senior.

Morgan Gose added 11 points for Milligan on 3-3 shooting from 3-point range, while Robinson, Callie Cox and Cain each led the Buffs with seven rebounds.

For Reinhardt, Jada Hubbard had a game-high 21 points on 8-15 shooting while Kateca Favors added 12. Favors and Ashlyn Brandon each had a game-high nine boards while Daniell Goss added eight and Danielle Pray had a game-high seven assists.

Next up, Milligan returns to the Steve Lacy Fieldhouse for its final home game of the fall stretch of the season on Saturday, Dec. 5, at 2 p.m. The Buffs will welcome the Lady Cavaliers of Montreat College before playing two more road games before Christmas.
