KINGSPORT, Tenn. (Feb. 28, 2015) â€" For the second year in a row, the Milligan College women's basketball team's Appalachian Athletic Conference tournament run and NAIA National Championship hopes came to an end in the AAC championship game as No. 10 Tennessee Wesleyan defeated the Buffaloes 69-43 Saturday afternoon at the MeadowView Marriott.
ÂÂ
Milligan's season ended with a record of 14-18 (10-10 AAC) while TWC (28-3, 17-3 AAC) followed up its regular season title with its first tournament title since 2011.
ÂÂ
Milligan was led by
Lindsee Price and All-Tournament honoree
Allison Jones who scored 10 points apiece. Price didn't miss from the field (4-for-4) and made both 3-point attempts while adding three assists and three rebounds. Jones had four assists and two rebounds.
ÂÂ
Joining Jones on the All-Tournament team was All-Conference first team selection
Hayley Wyrick. Wyrick, a sophomore who was also recognized last year as an All-Freshman, was held scoreless for only the second time of her career. She was 0-for-6 from the field but had six rebounds and two assists.
ÂÂ
Jones and Wyrick will enter next season with 984 career points. Senior
Chelsey Weddle scored three points and finished her career with 969 points.
ÂÂ
Weddle's only basket put Milligan on the board after the Buffs had spotted 10th-ranked Tennessee Wesleyan 15 points over the first 6:21. Milligan was 0-for-9 during the initial stretch to start the game while Tennessee Wesleyan started the game 7-for-10 over that same period of time.
ÂÂ
Milligan cut the lead down to six (22-16) with a
Courtney Wilson free throw with just over seven minutes left, and
Callie Cox finished the opening period with a 3-pointer as time expired, but the Lady Bulldogs opened the second half in much the same way they started the first. Fueled by a trio of buckets from Armeka Booker and a 3-pointer from Jenna Adams, Tennessee Wesleyan started the final 20 minutes on a 12-3 run.
ÂÂ
Tennessee Wesleyan then followed that with back-to-back threes from Adams to surge into its largest lead at 51-28, completing an 18-5 run.
ÂÂ
Adams, the conference player of the year, scored a season high 31 points on 10-of-21 shooting. She was 7-of-14 from three, added nine rebounds, and was the tournament MVP. Booker, last year's league player of the year, finished with 18 points and 14 rebounds.
ÂÂ
Milligan, which had combined to shoot 40 percent from the field over the first three tournament wins, shot only 30 percent (15-50) from the field against TWC. The Buffs were 5-of-17 from 3-point territory in the first half but went 1-for-10 in the second.
ÂÂ
Cox, like Price, connected on two 3-pointers and finished with eight points. The duo made back-to-back attempts early in the first half when the Buffs started to claw back at the early deficit.
ÂÂ
In last year's AAC tournament, Milligan defeated then-No. 17 Tennessee Wesleyan 61-55 in the semifinals before falling to Union 72-67 in the championship game. Friday night, the Buffs beat Union 90-72 in the semifinals for their fourth straight victory.
