MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. (Mar. 10, 2015) â€" Opportunistic gameplay characterized the Milligan College softball team on Tuesday as they swept Point University 5-0 and 6-2 on the road in Appalachian Athletic Conference action.
ÂÂ
Milligan (5-3, 4-0 AAC) remained undefeated in the conference as they took advantage of every chance they were given by Point (7-13, 3-5 AAC) in the doubleheader.
ÂÂ
The Buffs scored six runs on only five hits in game two, thanks in part to two timely errors which directly resulted in three runs for Milligan. The first error allowed
Caroline Testerman, who had advanced to third base after an
Amanda Dunaway single, to score and set up a sacrifice fly from
Natalie Sheffey which gave the Buffs a 4-1 lead coming out of the second inning.
ÂÂ
The second error came after
Jessica Connatser doubled in the top of the third, and both Connatser and
Lindsey Keys came home to boost the Milligan lead to 6-1.
ÂÂ
From there, the Milligan pitching squad led by
Jessica Goodson and
Kimberly Robinson went to work, holding Point to only one run off of three hits. The only threat came in the bottom of the seventh as the Skyhawks loaded the bases, but
Meghan Nicol came in as relief and struck out Brianna Lewis to end the game 6-2 before any damage could be done.
ÂÂ
Nicol recorded seven strikeouts total on the day as she baffled the Point hitters all throughout game one. Allowing only two hits in five innings, Nicol kept the Skyhawks scoreless, and once Goodson came in to close out game one, it was all over as the Buffs took home the 5-0 victory.
ÂÂ
Sheffey led the Buffs in hitting, recording both a double and a triple in game one, and Dunaway and Sheffey both knocked in three RBIs, with Testerman taking two of her own.
ÂÂ
Milligan, who has yet to play a home game, will remain on the road for its next two series against No. 3 Reinhardt University and Bryan College who is currently receiving votes. The Buffs will play their home opener on March 20 against Truett-McConnell College.
