Men's tennis splits final day of Hilton Head trip

HILTON HEAD, S.C. (March 11, 2015) -- The one full match of the day ended in an 8-1 loss to Kutztown University, but the Milligan College men's tennis team also wrapped up a 5-4 victory over Quincy University on Wednesday at the Hilton Head Beach and Tennis Resort.

The men started bright and early Wednesday morning to finish the match which was suspended Monday night due to darkness, and the Buffaloes needed only about five minutes to clinch. With Jackson Lenoir and Fernando Gonzalez serving with a 6-5 lead and the Buffs up 4-3 overall, Gonzalez had an easy hold of serve before the pair had an easy break in the final game. They played only 10 points.

Monday's other results in the Quincy match included a full Milligan sweep of singles courts three through six as Lenoir, Braden White, Joshua Crain and Daniel Peacock all won in super tiebreakers. Lenoir had the closest match with a 6-7, 7-6, 10-6 result, and the remaining three went to the wire as well, all being decided by two points in the super breaker.

On Wednesday, Lenoir and Gonzalez carried the energy and momentum gained from the morning match into the afternoon. The pair improved to 4-1 at two doubles this season with a 9-7 win, Milligan's lone point, over Kutztown's Rich Lichtenwalner and Gabriel Nogara Souza.

Milligan's next three matches will be at home. First up among the trio will be league opponent Reinhardt University on Wednesday, March 18, followed by Bluefield College and UVa-Wise the following Friday and Sunday. The Reinhardt match will serve as the Buffaloes spring opener.
