Baseball splits midweek doubleheader at Georgetown

GEORGETOWN, Ky. (March 12, 2015) â€" There was plenty of free baseball Thursday evening at Robert N. Wilson Field as the Milligan College baseball team went to extra innings twice against Georgetown College, but the Buffaloes settled for a split, winning the opener 9-8 in eight innings before letting a couple of late leads get away in a 7-6 loss in nine innings in the nightcap.

Milligan (6-4) will next host Truett-McConnell College in a weekend series that was recently moved to Sunday-Monday, March 15-16. Teams will play a doubleheader Sunday at 2 p.m. followed by a single game Monday at a time to be determined.

Brandon Malone led the way in the opening-game victory against preseason No. 8 Georgetown. With three hits, a run scored and six RBI's, Malone accounted for half of his run production in the final inning, lifting a one-out double to center field to score three and give Milligan the lead for good. Chavez Golden provided an insurance run two batters later which proved decisive as Georgetown scored three and had the tying run on third in the bottom half of the inning.

Corey Jenkins received the win in game one, and Wyatt Richardson received the save.

Austin Perry made the start and lasted 5.1 innings, but the freshman transfer from the University of Kentucky exited in the sixth when trouble loomed in the form of two on and only one out in a tie ballgame. Jenkins was brought in at that point and ended the threat with a punchout and groundout.

The Buffaloes had trouble putting Georgetown away in game two, and that ultimately proved to be their demise. Sam Tarlton drove in a go-ahead run in the fifth, Edwin Soto drove in a go-ahead run in the eighth, and Nate Clifton drove in a go-ahead run in the ninth, but Georgetown had the answer at every turn and won the game on a Damian Rutherford single that scored two.

Milligan pounded out 15 hits in game one and another 20 in game two. Malone was joined by five Buffaloes with multiple hits in game one, and Tyler Weir and Andrew Copas recorded four hits in game two. Golden and Clifton each had three hits in game two.

Milligan will host a three-game series against Truett-McConnell College next Sunday-Monday before hosting University of the Cumberlands on Tuesday, March 17.
