MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. (March 15, 2015) â€" Though the footing on the field was less than perfect due to the early morning rain, the Milligan College softball team stampeded to victory over Bluefield College in a Sunday afternoon doubleheader sweep (8-0, 9-0).
ÂÂ
Milligan (7-3, 6-0 Appalachian Athletic Conference) remained undefeated in and at the top of the AAC with the victories, while keeping Bluefield (0-8, 0-2 AAC) winless for yet another day.
ÂÂ
Quick feet took advantage of every error the Rams made, and as a result, the Buffs jumped out to big starts in both games of the day, scoring four runs in the first inning of each game.
ÂÂ
Continuing the game day déjà vu with a repeat performance in both games,
Makenzie Lilley hit two two-run homers, one in each game, to give Milligan an extra comfortable lead in both cases. When
Natalie Sheffey and
Jessica Connatser followed suit with their back-to-back solo home runs in game two, they shut the door on any comeback by Bluefield.
ÂÂ
Lilley and Sheffey led the team with three hits apiece, with Lilley adding five RBIs and Sheffey scoring five runs.
ÂÂ
However, Milligan's pitching squad never even gave the Rams a shot at a rally. Both
Meghan Nicol and
Jessica Goodson pitched four or more innings apiece with only one allowed hit, and
Sierra Plese closed out game one by forcing three batted balls to the waiting hands of a Milligan defender, leaving the Rams scoreless despite having two runners on.
ÂÂ
Milligan will compete in a doubleheader against Bryan College in Dayton, Tennessee, on Wednesday, March 18, and it could be an important series of games for the Buffs as Head Coach
Wes Holly is only two wins away from his 800-win milestone. First pitch is set to take place at 2 p.m.
