Baseball wins on walk-off, splits with Cumberlands

MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. (March 17, 2015) â€" Not even 24 hours after handing in a nine-inning complete game on the mound, senior Josh Peterson used his bat to lift the Milligan College baseball team to a 3-2 victory in the opening game of a doubleheader against University of the Cumberlands on Tuesday. Milligan split the day, losing the second game 3-1.

The loss snapped a four-game winning streak for the Buffaloes (10-5, 4-3 AAC) and marked the end of their perfect record (9-1) at Anglin Field this season. But they will turn around quickly once again for a doubleheader against Tennessee Temple University on Wednesday beginning at 2 p.m.

Peterson's walk-off single up the middle came on a 1-1 pitch with two out in the bottom of the seventh and took starting pitcher Hunter McDaniel off the hook for what would have been one of the hardest-luck losses a pitcher could take.

McDaniel threw a complete game three-hitter, highlighted by a no-hit bid which he carried into the sixth inning. Neither run surrendered by the senior right-hander was earned.

Peterson's winning RBI-single looked somewhat like Sam Tarlton's RBI-single which went off UC starting pitcher Donovan Feenstra's glove in the sixth inning. That one scored Edwin Soto with one out in a bases-loaded situation, but the Buffs stranded three in that inning and went on to the seventh facing a 2-1 deficit.

Tarlton added some defense too, helping McDaniel keep the no-hitter intact in the fifth with a nice bare-handed play from third base to throw out UC right fielder Latron Hunter racing toward first for the Patriots first hit. Two innings later, Hunter Suggs had the nice defensive play, cutting down Reed Spata at the plate to keep it a one-run game.

Nate Clifton started Milligan's rally in the seventh by singling up the middle then moving to second on a Nick Loughry sacrifice bunt. Tyler Weir tied the game with a single to right-center field on the first pitch he saw, then after Weir took second on an error, Peterson provided the last bit of magic with Milligan's second walk-off hit in the last three games.

Jonah Owenby made the start in game two and despite a quality start consisting of six innings, five hits, three runs (two earned), a walk and two strikeouts, the freshman suffered the loss. Owenby was stung by back-to-back doubles in the fourth, leading to two runs which proved to be the difference.

Brandon Malone put the Buffs on the board in the seventh with a solo blast, his second of the season, over the left-field fence.

Milligan will end its current home stand with a doubleheader against Tennessee Temple on Wednesday at 2 p.m.
