Baseball gets back rolling with sweep of Tennessee Temple

MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. (March 18, 2015) â€" There were no complete game gems thrown or walk-off hits recorded, but the Milligan College baseball team still provided fans with two exciting wins at Anglin Field on Wednesday, completing a doubleheader sweep of Tennessee Temple University by scores of 6-2 and 10-1.

The wins were the fifth and sixth for the Buffaloes (12-5, 4-3 AAC) in seven games this week and improved them to 11-1 on their home field. They also marked the first wins this week not to feature either a complete game from the starting pitcher or a walk-off hit from the offense as Milligan has made dominant pitching and timely hitting the norm lately.

Wednesday, freshman Austin Perry and senior Tanner Strange proved that a starting pitcher doesn't have to throw a complete game to be dominant. The pair combined to throw 11 innings and allow only nine hits and one walk while striking out six. They allowed only two runners across the plate, each of which went in as an unearned run.

Perry was the model of efficiency through the first half of his outing, having thrown only 21 pitches in three frames. He ran into error-induced trouble in the fourth inning which led to the only runs surrendered by Milligan's starting pitching on the day. Temple's two-run scoring outburst tied the game at two, but the tie was short-lived as Andrew Copas started a two-out rally with the bases clear in the bottom half, doubling to right-center then scoring one pitch later on a Hunter Suggs single.

Milligan rounded out the scoring in the fifth with three runs. Tyler Weir hit an RBI-double, and Brandon Malone and Chavez Golden followed later with RBI's in the inning.

The Buffs stepped on the gas in game two, scoring first with four runs in the third and following with at least one more in every inning beyond. Josh Peterson, Sam Tarlton, and Shane Salley each recorded two RBI's. Weir and Peterson each had three hits in the nightcap.

Strange, in the first start of the season, allowed only two runners past first in five strong innings. He improved to 1-0 after Perry improved to 2-0 in game one.

Up next, Milligan will be in Waleska, Georgia, for more Appalachian Athletic Conference action over the weekend. The three-game set against Reinhardt University is scheduled to start Saturday with a doubleheader at 1 p.m. and conclude Sunday with a single game, also at 1 p.m. The Buffs will be back home on Friday, March 27, for the start of a three-game set with Point University.
