COLUMBIA, S.C. (March 4, 2015) â€" It was a perfect afternoon for softball, and Milligan College made sure not to spoil it, claiming a pair of come-from-behind victories, 3-1 and 2-1, at Columbia College on Wednesday in an Appalachian Athletic Conference doubleheader.
ÂÂ
Under clear skies and a bright sun,
Jessica Goodson received both winning decisions in relief as the Buffaloes improved to 3-3 overall and jumped to the top of the AAC standings at 2-0.
Goodson struck out nine and didn't give up a run in her 7.2 innings of work. She was brought in to pitch in the fourth inning of game one with two on and nobody out and escaped trouble with a strikeout, sacrifice bunt and flyout. Goodson's strikeout to start the fourth was the first of seven she had in four innings in game one.
ÂÂ
Kimberly Robinson and
Meghan Nicol, the starting pitchers in games one and two, respectively, conceded only one run apiece in three-plus innings, but each required timely hitting on the part of the offense.
ÂÂ
Caroline Testerman and
Jessica Wheelock provided that in game one, doubling and scoring to put Milligan into the lead for good in the fifth inning. Testerman's and Wheelock's doubles were two of the five doubles Milligan had in game one.
Kacie Skeen accounted for a third by leading off the seventh with a double, and
Natalie Hauser had a fourth with an RBI-double that scored
Kaitlin Campbell.
Testerman and Wheelock were back at it in game two but this time by way of small ball. After a Columbia solo home run put the Koalas into the lead in the second inning, Testerman drew a walk in the sixth followed by a Wheelock hit batsman. Testerman would score on a
Jessica Connatser bunt hit later in the inning to tie it, and Wheelock came around to score on a
Natalie Sheffey sacrifice fly to give the Buffs the lead.
ÂÂ
Wheelock was 3-for-3 in game one with a single, two doubles, an RBI and a run.
ÂÂ
Tentatively, Milligan is scheduled to play next against University of the Cumberlands on Friday, March 6, on the road. Visit the schedule page at milliganbuffs.com for the most up-to-date changes.
