MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. (April 17, 2015) â€"
Tyler Weir and
Edwin Soto recorded three-hit games, but the Milligan College baseball team surrendered three runs in a decisive sixth inning and lost to St. Andrews University 10-7 Friday night in the opening game of a three-game Appalachian Athletic Conference series at Anglin Field.
ÂÂ
Milligan (20-14, 12-10 AAC) and St. Andrews (24-18, 12-7 AAC) will finish the series on Saturday with a doubleheader at 1 p.m.
ÂÂ
Weir registered the first of his three hits with a solo home run to lead off the bottom of the first inning as Milligan took the first lead in what would turn into a high-scoring affair over the first four innings. St. Andrews answered Weir's homer with two runs in the second and four in the third to go ahead 6-1, but the Buffs rallied with three in the third and three in the fourth to tie the game at 7-7.
ÂÂ
Brandon Malone and
Josh Peterson drove in a run apiece in Milligan's three-run third, and
Nate Clifton drove in a run in Milligan's three-run fourth. From there, the Buffs put runners on first and second with nobody out in two of the next three innings but came up empty the rest of the way.
ÂÂ
St. Andrews scored the final go-ahead run with a Daundray Van Slyke double to left-center field on a ball that went off the glove of
Nick Loughry diving in from left field. Van Slyke came around to score two batters later on a base hit the same way.
ÂÂ
Austin Perry, who entered partway through the fourth inning in relief of starting pitcher
Jake Watts, suffered the loss despite holding the Knights to no runs and only two hits outside of the sixth. Perry threw the final 5.1 innings, struck out three and walked two.
ÂÂ
Weir's three-hit day came alongside two RBI's and two runs scored. Loughry also finished in the multihit column with two.
ÂÂ
Saturday's doubleheader is the last scheduled home date of the year for the Buffs, but they will continue the season with seven more games on the road. After two midweek doubleheaders against Lindsey Wilson and University of the Cumberlands, Milligan finishes the regular season at Montreat College next Friday-Saturday, April 24-25.
