Baseball survives last inning rally by Bryan

MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. (April 3, 2015) â€" Friday's baseball game at Anglin Field was littered with showers of both rain and hits, and despite a three-inning rally by Bryan College, the Milligan College baseball team endured to take the 7-6 win.

Combined, Milligan (15-9, 7-7 Appalachian Athletic Conference) and Bryan (27-11, 8-6 AAC) recorded 24 total hits in the contest, including six doubles and a triple. The Buffs accounted for the majority of those big hits as Nate Clifton, Nick Loughry, Andrew Copas and Brandon Malone each hit one double apiece, with Malone hitting two.

The Buffs took the lead after a wild throw from the Lions allowed Edwin Soto to use his speed to turn a bunt into a standing triple, only to come home two pitches later as Malone just missed the centerfield fence with the first of his two doubles.

Malone's second double scored Soto again in the fifth as a part of a four-run inning put together by the Buffs. Copas and Shane Salley both singled to start the inning, and Clifton and Tyler Weir sent them on home. Soto followed with a single of his own, which scored Clifton, and Malone sent Soto around with his first pitch.

An error in the sixth helped Bryan plate two runs (5-2), but the Buffs returned the favor with two runs of their own as Loughery and Clifton used their doubles to bring them in.

The Lions held Milligan scoreless for the rest of the game, using a heads-up double play from Kelvin McMiller to erase the only two hits Milligan would muster, and from there, it was up to the Buffalo defense.

Bryan pressed hard in the top of the eighth as they loaded the bases with only one out, but Jarrett Ramsey came in to relieve Austin Perry and escaped the inning unscathed with a strikeout and a routine groundball.

Corey Jenkins came in to close out the game for Milligan, but after a pair of singles and a walk, he found himself with the bases loaded with no outs. CJ Owens doubled down the left field line to bring in two runs for Bryan, and a Preston King hit would bring in a third.

With the tying run at third, the go-ahead run on first, and two outs, Jenkins reached down deep to sit down McMiller and secure the win.

Malone led the Buffs, going 4-for-4 on the day with two doubles. Clifton, Soto and Copas all recorded two hits, with Soto scoring on both occasions.

Milligan will finish the series against Bryan on Saturday, April 4, in a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. They will then go on the road, traveling to Ohio on April 7 to play the University of Rio Grande and to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on April 8 to compete against No. 21 Point Park University. Both series will be doubleheaders.
