MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. (Sept. 1, 2015) â€" Milligan College volleyball got back into the win column with a sweep over the Lady Bulldogs of Tennessee Wesleyan College, 3-0 (25-19, 25-22, 25-21), Tuesday evening at the Steve Lacy Fieldhouse.
With the victory, the Buffaloes' record raised to 4-1 and 1-0 in Appalachian Athletic Conference, while TWC fell to 0-1 (0-1 AAC) to begin its campaign.
Reigning AAC Setter of the Week
Jessica Davenport paced the Milligan attack with 29 assists, while four other Buffs each recorded at least six kills.
Samantha Bruinius and
Emilee Linkous each had seven kills, while
Bailey Thomas and
Jenna Headrick each contributed with six.
Additionally, Bruinius and
Grace Ann Moorhouse led the Buffs' defense with eight and seven digs respectively, and Headrick and
Marissa Langford added three and two service aces, respectively.
The Buffs finished with at least 10 kills in all three sets, ending with 35 total kills, and eight players recording at least one. Additionally, Davenport had 10 assists in each of the first two sets to go along with nine in the final frame, and eight different Buffs finished with at least two digs.
In the opening set, Milligan took an early 5-0 lead, and after the score was 5-3, jumped ahead even more on an 8-4 run to make it 13-7. The Lady Bulldogs however, responded with four straight points to make it 13-11, but another run by Milligan made it 19-13 and all but put the set away for the Buffs, who finished it off with a 25-19 win.
In the opening frame, both Bruinius and Thomas had three kills, while
Jadin Foster and Bruinius each had three digs.
Next, the Buffs went down 5-2 before scoring five straight times to make it 7-5. TWC then used a 7-2 run to take a 12-9 advantage before Milligan came back to take the lead for good at 17-16. The Buffs would go on to take the set 25-22.
Overall, Headrick led the Buffs with four kills in the set, while Thomas added three, and three players (Bruinius, Moorhouse, Headrick) had two digs.
The third and final set was a nail biter for Milligan, who never led until the very end. With the Lady Bulldogs up 19-14, the Buffs dug down deep and went on a 7-0 run, featuring four kills (two by Linkous, one by Davenport, one by Bruinius) and an ace by Langford, to go up 21-19. TWC fought back to tie the set at 21, but the momentum gained by the Buffs was simply too much, as they went on to win the set 25-21 by scoring four straight times, three of which came on kills by Bruinius, who had four total in the set.
Linkous also finished the final set with four kills, while four Buffs (
Heather Harvey, Bruinius, Moorhouse, Linkous) all ended with three digs in the set.
Next up, the Buffs travel to Dalton, Georgia, for matches against Life University and Dalton State University on Saturday, Sept. 5, and are on the road for over a month, returning to the Milligan campus on Oct. 22 against AAC foe St. Andrews University.ÂÂ
