Women's soccer wins in AAC opener

BLACK MOUNTAIN, N.C. (Sept. 16, 2015) â€" The Milligan College women's soccer team started off Appalachian Athletic Conference action on the right foot, notching a 1-0 victory over Montreat College Wednesday afternoon on Howard Fisher Memorial Field.
 
With the AAC opening win, Milligan's record rose to 2-3 overall and 1-0 in the league, while Montreat's dropped to 0-4-1 and 0-1.
 
Amy Long scored the lone goal of the match early in the second half when Milligan keeper Charlotte Stephens punted the ball over the Montreat midfielders and Long beat her defender to go one-on-one with the keeper, finishing with a shot into the bottom right corner of the net.
 
In addition to Long's goal, the Buffaloes saw multiple opportunities from Brittany Davis, Amy Olvera and Caroline Gill, but could not convert. Overall, the Buffs controlled the run of play from 75 minutes, dominating in both the shots (21-7) and corner kick (7-1) categories.
 
Stephens recorded her second shutout of the season for the Buffs and made three saves, while Montreat's Melina Wilkinson finished with six.
 
Next up, Milligan travels to Barbourville, Kentucky, this Saturday, Sept. 19, to play AAC foe Union College in the final opportunity of a three-match road trip. The Buffaloes return home to Anglin Field on Sept. 23 to welcome the Tornado of King University and begin a four-match home stand.
