Goals by Olvera, Allonier not enough in women's soccer loss

MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. (Sept. 26, 2015) -- Freshman Amy Olvera and senior Ellery Allonier both scored go-ahead goals on headers and Charlotte Stephens continued her outstanding season in the net, but the Milligan College women's soccer team lost to Tennessee Wesleyan College 3-2 Saturday night on Anglin Field.

The loss was Milligan's first in the Appalachian Athletic Conference and set the Buffaloes back to 2-5-1 (1-1-1 AAC). Tennessee Wesleyan (4-4-1, 3-1 AAC) moved up to second place in the AAC.

Olvera's and Allonier's goals gave the Buffs the lead in the 16th and 47th minutes, respectively, and both came via corner kicks by Christine Hardin and Keri Harrison. Olvera found the net near the six yard line following Hardin's lofted ball into the box.

After TWC tied it on a goal by Alexis Dalberth in the 35th minute and the Bulldogs seemed to be taking control late in the first half, Allonier got the Buffs off to a great start in the second half. The senior put Milligan back on top 2-1 when she headed Harrison's corner kick in at the far post.

Tennessee Wesleyan managed to tie the game and take the lead in a span of three minutes midway through the second half. The Bulldogs tied it at 2-2 in the 66th minute when Emiley Saddler came up with a loose ball in the penalty area and took a shot that deflected off the Milligan defense.

On their next time down the field, the Bulldogs took the lead for good on a counterattack that ended with a crossing pass going again off the Milligan defense and in for the deciding goal. Stephens, who has matched her career high of nine saves in both games since earning AAC Defensive Player of the Week honors, had no chance on either of TWC's last two goals.

Stephens' nine saves brought her to 26 saves over the last three games, but the Buffs are 0-2-1 during that stretch. She currently ranks second in the AAC with 47 saves this season.

Milligan will be back here on Anglin Field for another AAC matchup on Wednesday, Sept. 30, against Truett-McConnell College. Match time is set for 5 p.m. with the men to follow at approximately 7 p.m.
