Volleyball earns team win at King tri-match

BRISTOL, Tenn. (Sept. 29, 2015) â€" Every member of the Milligan College volleyball team made an impact Tuesday afternoon at King University as the Buffaloes completed their 11-match road trip with a sweep of Concord University (25-20, 25-20, 25-18). The day started off with a 3-0 loss to King (25-14, 25-21, 25-20).

Milligan (9-7, 5-2 AAC) was led in the win by Samantha Bruinius' 11 kills and Jessica Davenport's 36 assists, but it was a team effort that gave the Buffs their fifth win in the last seven matches.

Behind Bruinius' seventh match of the season with double-digit kills, 10 Buffs recorded at least one kill and five had four or more. It translated into 50 total kills and a .342 attack percentage, both high marks for the team this season in three- or four-set matches.

The team effort was most evident in the first set when Milligan put together a 12-2 run which turned a 14-11 disadvantage into a 23-16 advantage. Five Buffs recorded kills during that span, including three from Marissa Langford and back-to-back assisted blocks by Savannah Benton and Jenna Headrick/Emilee Linkous. Charlie Bateman followed later during the same run with a solo block.

As the match progressed, more and more individuals made their own contributions. Jadin Foster, Davenport and Langford registered kills during a couple of mini runs of 3-0 as Milligan took control of the middle set near the midway mark.

In the final set, it was Bailey Thomas who recorded a kill to even the set at 12-12, and the junior followed with two kills and a block assist on the next three points to give Milligan four straight points and the lead for good. Heather Harvey, Bruinius, Alora Ricker and Linkous then closed the final door with kills on the last four Milligan points.

Grace Ann Moorhouse tallied 23 digs on the defensive end while Bruinius and Alyssa Rupert had 13 and 10, respectively. Milligan's 13 assisted blocks were the second highest of the season in three-setters.

In the early match against King, Davenport had 18 assists and Linkous led the Buffs in kills with seven. Moorhouse had 12 digs.

With Milligan's 11-match road trip done, the Buffs will be back home for the first time in over a month when they host St. Andrews University on Friday, Oct. 2, in Appalachian Athletic Conference action. Match time is set for 6:30 p.m., and Milligan will turn right back around for another match on Saturday, Oct. 3, against Columbia College at 11 a.m.
