LAURINBURG, N.C. (Jan. 16, 2016) â€" After trailing for nearly 17 and a half minutes between the start of the second quarter and the end of the third,
Allison Jones and
Sarah Robinson both recorded double-doubles to help the No. 24 Milligan College women's basketball team thwart the would-be upset and defeat St. Andrews University, 61-53, Saturday afternoon at Harris Court.
After losing only its first Appalachian Athletic Conference game on the road a week ago, the victory gave the Buffaloes (16-4 overall, 10-1 AAC) their fourth straight season sweep over the Lady Knights (2-16, 0-12) as Milligan has now won all eight games it has played against St. Andrews. The win was also Milligan's first on the road since Dec. 12 in Bluefield, Virginia, but was also the team's conference-leading seventh road win as the Buffs begin a new AAC win streak after winning their first eight conference games before the loss last week.
Jones had a game-high 16 points for her fourth straight game of 16 or more points. She added 11 rebounds for the second double-double of her career and second of her senior season. Robinson was next with 13 points and a game-high 12 boards for her AAC-leading eighth double-double of the season. Jones was also one of three Buffs with two 3-pointers as
Morgan Gose had eight points on two threes, and
Lindsee Price had eight points and a game-high six assists.
Callie Cox also tied a career-high with five helpers and scored four points.
Through nearly the first 26 minutes of action, it looked as if St. Andrews, the last-place team in the AAC and now losers of 15 straight, were going to pull off the big upset. However, beginning with only four minutes to go in the third quarter, a 3-pointer by Jones, an acrobatic layup by Cox and a three by Gose highlighted an 11-2 Buffs run to end the third quarter.
Milligan went into the final 10 minutes of action with a three-point advantage, and pushed it to six through the first five minutes of the fourth quarter as Gose scored on the assist from
Andi Lamb and Price sunk a three to make it 47-41.
For the first time in the series, Milligan trailed at the end of one half as the Buffs started the second quarter missing 11 of their first 13 shots from the field. The Buffs also began the game only 2-14 (14.3 percent) on 3-pointers before
Courtney Wilson connected on one from long range to give the Buffs the lead back at 23-21 with just under three minutes to go in the first half.
Early in the game, the Buffs took advantage of St. Andrews' turnovers. On the very first possession of the game, a steal from Cox led to a 3-pointer from Jones, and the Lady Knights' second turnover on only their third possession led to a score by Robinson. Price accounted for the assist on each of Milligan's first two baskets of the game.
Next, after taking advantage of turnovers, the Buffs took advantage of poor transition defense as after a missed shot, Jones grabbed the rebound and outletted the ball quickly to Cox, who found Robinson streaking down the court. Robinson took the ball, dribbled through of couple of St. Andrews defenders near the top of the key, and finished for her second basket early in the game.
In all, the Buffs had two steals off of four Lady Knights' turnovers in the first five minutes of the game, but despite the good start, the Lady Knights stayed in the game due to poor shooting from both teams in the quarter. At one point late in the frame, Milligan was shooting 20 percent while St. Andrews dipped below 10 percent.
However, three 3-pointers by three Lady Knights over a span of 1:40 gave St. Andrews the lead before the first three by Gose with the assist to
Caitlyn Cain, followed by a score by Cain after she put back a miss from Gose, gave the Buffs the lead back to end the first quarter.
Robinson and Jones combined for nine of Milligan's 14 rebounds in the first quarter, and also accounted for half of its point total in the period. At the break, Robinson and Jones combined for both 13 points and 13 boards.
St. Andrews was paced by Alana Artis' double-double of 10 points and 11 rebounds. Alexis Redd also had 11 points and six rebounds, while Alexus Davis had eight boards to go with seven points.
Price, who came into the game ranked third in the AAC in assists per game out-assisted both the No. 2 and No. 4 players in assists, Redd and Kelsey Houser of St. Andrews, by a combined 6-2. Additionally, Robinson, who is No. 3 in the conference in rebounds per game, outrebounded the No. 2 player in boards, Davis, by four (12-8).
Next up, the Buffs return to the Steve Lacy Fieldhouse on Thursday, Jan. 21, for a 5:30 p.m. game time as Milligan looks for its third straight sweep of the season. Milligan will play Tennessee Wesleyan College, a team the Buffs defeated by three in Athens, Tennessee, back when the Lady Bulldogs were the No. 23 ranked team in the country.
