MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. (Jan. 2, 2016) â€" The Milligan College women's basketball team shared the wealth and combined for 21 assists from seven players, and connected on seven three-pointers that all seemed to come right when the Buffaloes needed them, all a part of a 71-62 victory over Union College Saturday afternoon at the Steve Lacy Fieldhouse.
Milligan moved up to 13-3 overall and a league-best 7-0 in the Appalachian Athletic Conference while Union fell to 8-6 (3-3 AAC). Additionally, the Buffs used the win to take a 13-12 all-time lead in their series with the Bulldogs.
En route to out-assisting Union by 20, every Buff who recorded an assist also scored at least three points and two rebounds.
Kelly Barnett and
Sarah Robinson led with 14 points while
Lindsee Price added 11 and
Callie Cox had eight.
On the boards,
Courtney Wilson had 10, followed by Robinson with seven and Price with five while Barnett hit three triples, and Price and
Morgan Gose each had two. Milligan also recorded five blocks from five players, and Wilson and Cox led with five assists each.
After back-to-back threes from Gose got Milligan started in the final quarter and made the score 61-45, the Buffs largest lead of the game, Union went on an 11-4 run to get back within 10 at 65-56 with four minutes to go. Next, the Bulldogs made it a six-point margin at 68-62 with two minutes left before being held scoreless the rest of the way.
Union also had a timely run to start the third quarter, this one an 8-3 stretch before Barnett halted the run with her second three of the half to make it 39-32 with 7:21 left in the frame.
In total, the Buffs had three triples in the first 5:10 of the third quarter as Priced connected on her second of the game to make it a 10-point game at 44-34, capping an 8-2 Milligan run.
Union missed its first nine shots of the game as the Buffs had stretches of five straight and four straight points to take an 11-8 advantage after the first 10 minutes. Both teams only made three field goals in the first quarter.
The Bulldogs then used two 4-0 stretches early in the second quarter to tie the game at 18 before Milligan used a large 15-4 run over the last five minutes of the opening half to pull away.
Part of the Buffs' advantage in the half was due to 87.5 percent (7-8) shooting from the free throw line, compared to only 57.1 percent for Union.
Union was paced by 25 points and eight boards from Lydia Nash, and Adreana Jefferson scored 13.
Next up, Milligan stays on its home floor to welcome the Lady Lions of No. 17 Bryan College to the fieldhouse on Thursday, Jan. 7, at 5:30 p.m. The matchup will be the second ranked opponent the Buffs have faced so far this season, the other being a 3-point upset at No. 23 Tennessee Wesleyan College on Nov. 18.
