Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Strong fourth quarter helps No. 21 Buffs to fourth straight win

MONTREAT, N.C. (Jan. 27, 2016) â€" After Sarah Robinson sank a jumper to tie the game as the buzzer sounded to end the third quarter, it was a 21-9 run featuring five 3-pointers in the fourth quarter that sealed the victory for the No. 21 Milligan College women's basketball team, 76-69, over Montreat College Wednesday evening at McAlister Gymnasium.

With the victory, Milligan continued to improve on its league-best records of 18-4 overall, 12-1 in the Appalachian Athletic Conference, and 9-4 on the road. The win was also the Buffs fourth straight conference win and Milligan's eighth over Montreat (10-11, 6-7 AAC) in the last nine meetings.

The deciding run for the Buffs began with 7:12 left in the game when Courtney Wilson finished with a layup off an inbounds play with the assist from Allison Jones.

Wilson would go on to assist on the next basket, a three by Morgan Gose, then connected on a three of her own from Jones with 5:12 to go, making the score 62-53. Gose, meanwhile, would hit a second three during the run, while Jones was the major force behind the Milligan attack, scoring 10 points and adding two assists during the run.

Overall, Milligan went on to outscore Montreat 22-12 in the third quarter and 29-24 in the fourth as Milligan led by 12, 70-58, with just under three minutes left in the game. The Lady Cavaliers attempted to come back on a 9-3 run before free throws by Lindsee Price and Kelly Barnett closed the deal.

The Buffs put four players in double-figure scoring as Jones had 19 for the fourth time in five games. Wilson had a career high with 17 points while Barnett had 11. Robinson had her AAC-best ninth double-double, her second against Montreat this season, with 12 points and 12 boards.

Price finished with nine points while Andi Lamb had six. Jones also added four assists while Callie Cox had four steals.

After trailing for the majority of the first half, Milligan used an 11-3 run between the end of the second quarter and start of the third to get within three at 35-32 with 8:21 to go in the third. Then, after trailing by seven at 40-33, a 10-2 Buff run featuring two 3-pointers by Price gave Milligan its first lead since 8-7 at 43-42.

Wilson scored six straight points to finish the first quarter for the Buffs and began the second quarter with another basket for her eighth straight point. However, it was a 9-0 Montreat run before Wilson's streak and a 10-3 run after her score 30 seconds into the second quarter that gave Montreat an 11-point lead at 30-19 midway through the second period.

Barnett's coast-to-coast layup with 5:18 to go in the first half halted the latter Montreat run, a stretch that featured two 3-pointers from Niroshka Perez, who was the only Lady Cavalier to shoot a three in the first half as she made 3-of-4 attempts from long range to start the game.

Arianna Williams led the Lady Cavaliers with 19 points, while Shannon Jackson had 16, Darah DeWalt had 14 and Perez added 10. Jackson also had a double-double, finishing with 11 rebounds.

Next up, Milligan begins the latter half of its 14 straight AAC games to finish the regular season with home games against Truett-McConnell College and Bluefield College on Saturday, Jan. 30, and Wednesday, Feb. 3, respectively. Game times will be at 2 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. with the men's games to follow each.
