Volleyball reaches 30 regular-season wins in finale

COLUMBIA, S.C. (Nov. 5, 2016) â€" The Milligan College volleyball team brought home two victories on the final day of the regular season to finish the 2016 regular-season campaign with a record of 30-7 (19-3 AAC) and a runner-up finish in the Appalachian Athletic Conference. Milligan defeated AAC foes Bryan College in four sets (20-25, 25-12, 25-17, 25-16) and Allen University in three sets (25-17, 25-15, 25-13) in the Saturday trimatch.

The final victory of the day marked the first time Milligan reached 30 wins in a season since the 1997 team, which Head Coach Doneva Bays was a part of as a player, won 34 matches. The previous high since then was from the 2010 team which ended the regular season and postseason with a record of 29-12 (11-3 AAC).

Milligan's 19 wins in the conference this season were the most by a Milligan team in the history of the AAC.

Senior Charlie Bateman notched a new career high in kills by tallying 13 in the four-set win against Bryan, and after a narrow loss in the first game of the day, Milligan took the rest from there. Behind Bateman's career high and 14 kills from senior Samantha Bruinius in the first match and 17 kills from junior Marissa Langford in the second match, Milligan closed out the regular season on a high note.

Freshman setter Kellee Geren, the AAC's reigning setter of the week, recorded 41 assists against Bryan and 36 against Allen to finish her first regular-season campaign with 1,301 assists. Senior Grace Ann Moorhouse, the reigning AAC defender of the week, led the Buffs with 28 digs on the day.

Milligan will look to win its 31st match in the opening round of the AAC tournament, scheduled to begin Thursday, Nov. 10, in Kingsport, Tennessee, at the MeadowView Marriott. Full tournament information and bracket for the three-day playoff will be released by the AAC in the coming days.
