MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. (Feb. 13, 2016) â€" Senior
Kurt Brooks drained an 18-footer with less than one second left on the clock to send the Milligan College men's basketball team to victory over Point University, 81-80, Saturday evening at Steve Lacy Fieldhouse.
ÂÂ
It improved Milligan to 15-9 (10-7 Appalachian Athletic Conference) and dropped Point, which led by seven with just over five minutes left, to 10-18 (7-9 AAC).
ÂÂ
Brooks made his shot with half a second left, knocking down a fade-away from the top of the key after Milligan had called a timeout with 4.9 seconds left, under its own basket, in an 80-79 ballgame. Brooks was one of five Buffs to score in double figures, finishing with 13 points, five rebounds and three assists. He made his last of three triples with 5:12 left in regulation, sparking the final push which saw the Buffs erase a 70-63 deficit.
ÂÂ
Sophomore
David Casaday was an instrumental part of Milligan's closing rally as well. Following Brooks' three which made it 70-66, Casaday made one from the corner on the next possession to make it 72-69, then scored Milligan's next five points to make it 75-74 with 1:54 left. ÂÂ
ÂÂ
Gabriel Logan put the Buffs in front 76-75 for the first time since early in the second half with a fast-paced layup with 1:14 left. Once the game became knotted in the 11th and final tie at 77-77 with 49 seconds left,
Milos Petrovic gave Milligan a two-point lead at 79-77 with an offensive putback with 26 seconds left.
ÂÂ
That lead was short-lived, however, as Point's Jonathan Manning sank a 3-pointer with 14 seconds left to put the Skyhawks out front, 80-79, and set up Brooks' winner.
ÂÂ
Milligan saw five players reach double figures with Casaday leading the way with a career-high 18 points, followed by Brooks with 13,
James Songster with a career-high-tying 12,
Julian Bailey with 11, and Petrovic with 10. Bailey also led the team in rebounds with 13, recording the game's only double-double, his AAC-leading 15th double-double. Songster led Milligan with four assists.
ÂÂ
Point was led in scoring by Traevon Gresham and Seth Houston with a game-high 21 points apiece. Jacob Pettway scored 19.
ÂÂ
The Buffs travel to Dayton, Tennessee, to face Bryan College on Wednesday, Feb. 17, before returning home for senior day against Warren Wilson College on Saturday, Feb. 20.
